MTBMap App

MTBMap App is a simple app to find and navigate singletrack trails for mountain biking.

The tracks are gotten from the OpenStreetMap database and are updated about once a week.

There are tracks and maps from all over the world and you can zoom in to very high detail.

Simple user interface

The user interface is kept simple. You can show your current location, you can show a heatmap indicating where others have been riding, you can switch between color, grayscale, or dark mode, and you can share the current map position with others.

Install it as an app

Install the app by adding it to your home screen. The app will then use the entire screen of your device, and it will work fine offline.

Location and direction

Click on the icon in the bottom right corner to show your current location. Be sure you give access to both location and direction when you are asked for it.

Make sure you give access when asked
It shows your current location (it will follow you), compass direction (can be incorrect, depending on the phone), and altitude above sea level. Click the location indicator to turn it off.
Clicking the compass needle above the location button will show direction-up instead of the default north-up. Note that this will consume more battery.

Tracks

Any track that is tagged for MTB in the OpenStreetMap database will show up as either a green (easy), blue (intermediate), red (difficult), or black (expert) track on the map. Dashed lines on the map are tracks not tagged for MTB, but might be good for biking as well.

Biking heatmap

Turn on the biking heatmap to see where other people have been riding their bikes. This is a mix of road biking, gravel biking, and trail biking. Toggle the heatmap on and off to figure out if the "heat" is from a trail or a road.

The heatmap in the middle here indicates there are trails for mountain bikes.

Dark mode

Above the button for the heatmap, there is a button where you can switch between color mode, grayscale mode, and dark mode. Very useful if you use the app for live navigation and need better contrast.

Use dark mode for better contrast if you use the app for live navigation.

Share with others

Clicking the share icon will copy the current map position as a link to the clipboard. The link can then easily be shared with others.

If you click the QR-code icon shown it will open up a larger QR code which can be scanned by another phone if you want to share it with others.
